From the Gothic Line to Camp Darby: Author Shares Legacy of Commander Pippo and US Army Ties
History came alive at the Darby library as community members turned out for a special "Meet the Author" event featuring Laura Poggiani, October 2. A former high school teacher who holds a university specialization in the psychology of developmental writing, Poggiani brings a deep educational and narrative background to her historical work. She is also the niece of the legendary Partisan Commander Manrico Ducceschi, widely known by his historical nom de guerre, "Pippo."
“Commander Ducceschi was one of Italy's most prominent partisan leaders during the War of Liberation, commanding over 7,000 partisans and controlling a crucial 40-kilometer stretch of the Gothic Line,” said Poggiani. “Because of his strategic positioning and effectiveness, his unit was soon incorporated into the U.S. Fifth Army, where they were equipped with U.S. uniforms and weapons to coordinate Allied operations.
The room was filled with readers who listened as Poggiani talked about her uncle's life and the intricate ties of the Italian resistance. Following the presentation, an question and answer session took place, with audience members asking questions about Commander Pippo's legacy.
A highlight of the afternoon was the official book donation. Poggiani presented a copy of her biography dedicated to Commander Pippo, making sure the local readership has permanent access to this shared history.
"Thank you so much for being here today, Mrs. Laura sharing your fascinating story and for donating this book so that the entire community can enjoy the reading," said Timothy Andersen, US Army Garrison Italy Deputy Garrison Manager.
Poggiani graciously accepted the remarks, adding, "It is always an honor to be with you and share details of our common history."
Following the formal program, guests gathered to enjoy light refreshments provided by the local library. The event concluded with a book signing session, giving attendees the opportunity to speak with the author one-on-one and have their copies personalized.
